It's been awhile. How are you?</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Life has been busy and busier.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
We are settling in for fall. What's your favorite season? I love early summer and fall. But once the gray and rain starts, it gets tough for me. I just like to be dry and warm. So that's why I'm inspired to make some beautiful things to get me through till the sun graces us again.<br />
<br /></div>

<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Foggy mornings, golden sunlight, pumpkins, crisp autumn colored leaves. Fall really is beautiful. </div>

There is so much going on the world right now that needs our prayers and sacrifices (Colossians 1:24.) So much pain, loss and suffering.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I was just reading an article about Sarah, a pregnant mother who died yesterday from multiple bee stings. And it made me hold my nursing baby closer, and shower her golden hair with extra kisses. I'm grateful for the time I have with my family and loved ones. I try not to take any of it for granted. Please keep Sarah, her husband, and her four children in your prayers.</div>
<br />

<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
Yesterday was our 9th wedding anniversary. We had a slow, relaxing dinner gathered around the creaking table. It sounds like home.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
From the table we looked out at one of our raised garden beds where a delphinium and a sunflower are growing, both of which we did not plant. It's funny because I meant to plant sunflowers this year, but never got a chance, and the birds must have known and dropped a seed from the feeder we hung in the corner of the garden. We watch the sunflower follow the sun first east, then at midday it stretches straight and tall, and by dinner it's facing west. So simple and beautiful. It's just another reminder to me to smile more and grow impatient less.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

It's officially summer. It's hot and we just finished school (mostly) for the year, so that makes it official. I'm loving the slower pace. June was a whirlwind of company and hosting and camping and fun. But to be honest, I'm ready to slow down a bit and relax. I have plans to sew and hike and work out in our much neglected garden. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
On my birthday, we made a trip to the Portland Rose Garden. I try to go every June when the flowers are perfectly in bloom. </div>

I know this is random, but I had to share these flowers from the garden. The top photo is a flower my neighbor gave me from his garden last year. They are so vibrant and amazing. The second pic is of the limelight hydrangeas my hubby got for my birthday our first year in our new home. So, I guess this isn't random. It's all about flowers and birthday gifts!<br />

Things have been busy around here. We just got back from a wedding in Park City, Utah. I can't stop daydreaming about the beautiful scenery. Incredibly beautiful. But here we are, back to work, and in a whirlwind. Like always. At least lately. My checklists each day seem to get longer and longer. Let me show you what I've been up to. </div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
First on the list: make a dress for Evelyn to wear for the wedding. The last two sewing projects I tried, following my own patterns, did not turn out as I hoped. Both are awaiting readjustments. So when I chose to make a baby dress, I decided to follow a pattern rather than risk wasting time and fabric. I usually don't like following patterns. But Anna Maria Horner's Piece of Cake Dress did not fail me. It's a quick sew, and what's even better, she has a video on You Tube you can follow if you get stuck. I was excited about this one. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiIGYXwG9m41zliPU3n4xXenuaiWG8mlT9xZX2rSVo8HfcTJ9BTRMZ4i6969eG5DHfA6F15b5qua6jSWFCCY1Rie31jhCzFM8ADiUETlL9WwRaI7cU7L7_ycmdW9edc2jEm4n4PFfd0r8Iq/s1600/IMGP4968.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiIGYXwG9m41zliPU3n4xXenuaiWG8mlT9xZX2rSVo8HfcTJ9BTRMZ4i6969eG5DHfA6F15b5qua6jSWFCCY1Rie31jhCzFM8ADiUETlL9WwRaI7cU7L7_ycmdW9edc2jEm4n4PFfd0r8Iq/s1600/IMGP4968.JPG" height="425" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg-_tv1qXbSOJebyl04i9YpUdGq_60He3EVg86yonFCASgYJM5B16yBMOunulzJFk93z7JjSDc07ow0xL1IBwLn_cnhetaU_n2CcV2gHCI9lhYRIdwgmwCWyXS7VjdMy3bsIu6lgAKPjzJJ/s1600/IMGP4969.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg-_tv1qXbSOJebyl04i9YpUdGq_60He3EVg86yonFCASgYJM5B16yBMOunulzJFk93z7JjSDc07ow0xL1IBwLn_cnhetaU_n2CcV2gHCI9lhYRIdwgmwCWyXS7VjdMy3bsIu6lgAKPjzJJ/s1600/IMGP4969.JPG" height="426" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
Second on the list: make raspberry muffins with raspberries from the raspberry forest in our backyard. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjvi2dBb3ZMUhzBiBzO8_gSnCbdsNfZV7NhPup48kxw9BLarfWBLvw0k7LoYzCKRNPOrtP9JomVMm3BggJ1nol2O5gsvwSWiCN4da8qtb-AhYPWJ6qfAjmNoGv_q_3YnOMJsEbSaEaXM1xK/s1600/IMGP4979.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjvi2dBb3ZMUhzBiBzO8_gSnCbdsNfZV7NhPup48kxw9BLarfWBLvw0k7LoYzCKRNPOrtP9JomVMm3BggJ1nol2O5gsvwSWiCN4da8qtb-AhYPWJ6qfAjmNoGv_q_3YnOMJsEbSaEaXM1xK/s1600/IMGP4979.JPG" height="426" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
Last cool thing on the list worth mentioning: loads and loads of laundry. One of my least favorite chores. And these pants were both grass stained. To remove them, I used some powder Oxy Clean, and some liquid gel Resolve. If a grass stain is dry, wet it to reactivate the stain. Then treat and let sit a few minutes before washing according to the garment's instructions. Here's the thing. When in doubt, I air dry any items in question. That way I won't set any stains in the dryer and can treat them again if necessary. This time, it worked like a charm. Two pair of pants were saved! On to the next. list of chores. It's seriously a challenge to keep up around this place. </div>
<br />

I've been waiting months to make <a href="http://naturallyella.com/2012/08/08/roasted-veg-tacos-with-avocado-cream-and-feta/">Roasted Veggie Tacos with Avocado Cream and Feta.</a> Seriously nummy. It's easy to make, just takes a little time chopping all the veggies. Since I'm eating foods that won't trigger another gallstone attack, I substituted red quinoa for the tortilla. </div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
We spent the day working outside, and still, there's so much to do. And we're on just 1/4 acre. Some days I think I'd love to have a small farm with a white farmhouse, and some open fields lined with evergreens. We'd grow lots of dahlias, geraniums, hydrangeas, pumpkins, tomatoes, kale and zucchini. There'd be lots of fruit trees and chickens. And then I think, "You're crazy." When would we have time? And I love our yard, imperfect as it may be.<br />
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
So we just keep working on it. And I love it. It's so relaxing working in the dirt. Today I planted more salvia to replace the ones my shasta daisies insanely took over. And harvested all the rhubarb. I'm planning on more strawberry rhubarb crisp and rhubarb jam. I just have to learn how to make it first. Anyone have any pointers on canning? Or good resources?</div>

Getting started in sewing can feel a little overwhelming. I'm still learning how to read patterns and often prefer to come up with my own design. But whether I am following someone else's directions or my own, there are some things to know before cutting out a pattern.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
You've probably heard the terms grain and selvage. Fabric works best when it's cut correctly in relation to the grain, so this is how to find the grain. </div>
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjL6qLijiijVYznu5bvTm87rz_fLumLQbRClzsCbHser8jnOa1jUcdiBEngFbieqEPLRympPS3nK6z7T4U7QZYAfPCRRIThmoVfoIK9bMlkRnSiQPj2WlGWROR_E-A8701D7Kgp6n4-7tr6/s1600/IMGP4691.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjL6qLijiijVYznu5bvTm87rz_fLumLQbRClzsCbHser8jnOa1jUcdiBEngFbieqEPLRympPS3nK6z7T4U7QZYAfPCRRIThmoVfoIK9bMlkRnSiQPj2WlGWROR_E-A8701D7Kgp6n4-7tr6/s1600/IMGP4691.JPG" height="266" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Selvage edge</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div style="text-align: center;">
First, fabrics usually come in 44/45, 54 or 60 in. widths. They are measured from selvage to selvage. <i>Selvage </i>is the finished, uncut edge of fabric. If you've purchased fabric with a print, you might notice a white strip along the edge with all the info and coordinating color circles along the edge. Or there might be tiny holes along a solid colored fabric. This is the selvage edge. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The<i> grain</i> of fabric refers to the threads used to weave the fabric together. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The straight, or lengthwise grain runs parallel to the selvage. Sometimes it is simply referred to as the grain. The threads running in this direction have been pulled tightly while the fabric was woven, so it doesn't have much stretch. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The width is called the crossgrain. It runs perpendicular to the selvage and has more stretch. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="text-align: start;">So if you purchase a yard of 45 in. wide fabric, you will have a cut piece that measures 1 yard (36 in.) in length and 45 in. in width. Okay, one more. </span><br />
<span style="text-align: start;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div>
Bias is cut at a 45 degree angle to the grain (straight) or crossgrain of fabric. There are no threads woven in this direction, so cutting along the bias will give you the most stretch.<br />
<br />
Hopefully this will get you started, either in reading patterns or creating your own!</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
We planted some seeds several weeks back, and the parsley, peppers, and kale are sprouting. My echinacea doesn't look like it's going to grow. I think we took the starters out too soon. Oh well, we're learning. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I made this Easter gift, which I call "The Beachcomber's Skirt," for my 7 year old sister-in-law who lives minutes from California beaches. The large pockets are designed to be filled with shells and sand dollars. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
And, the other spring related news is that I have been experimenting with my own homemade surface cleaning spray. I've tried just vinegar and water or vinegar, water, and essential oils. Around Christmas time I used peppermint oil, but for spring I love grapefruit. But the trick, at least for me, is to mix in a little rubbing alcohol so it doesn't have such a strong vinegar smell. And the combination of white distilled vinegar and the rubbing alcohol makes a great disinfectant. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj27Za9qKUsquydtuYVWBnOsOW9f3qxBgIGRTS2C2i4VsJ715RbIWxcakGWhzClhltO_RltfwAUl7dacmwVMKf_D92ib_eA6gd6CccXttfnuEfGJs8Xt07zrMKPvVwG_WBQknLPxyIEu203/s1600/IMGP4617.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj27Za9qKUsquydtuYVWBnOsOW9f3qxBgIGRTS2C2i4VsJ715RbIWxcakGWhzClhltO_RltfwAUl7dacmwVMKf_D92ib_eA6gd6CccXttfnuEfGJs8Xt07zrMKPvVwG_WBQknLPxyIEu203/s1600/IMGP4617.JPG" height="426" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
In a spray bottle I mix about:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
1 c. white distilled vinegar</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
3 c. water</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
1/4 c. rubbing alcohol</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
about 20 drops Grapefruit essential oil</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
And that's it. We buy the baking soda and vinegar at Costco, so it's pretty inexpensive, especially considering what I would pay for store-bought natural cleaners. The oil I purchased at Chuck's Produce, but you can find them at Whole Foods as well. I've smelled lots of different oil scents, and my favorites beside grapefruit are the lemon and lavender. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
When I clean sinks, the shower and the toilets, I first sprinkle in baking soda and then spray the surfaces before wiping it clean. I use the spray almost daily on the counter tops in the bathroom and kitchen to keep things clean. And I know its safe around food and babies. They usually come along and spray everything for me. Just make sure if you let the kids help they don't take a full bottle and jar of baking soda or your supplies might disappear. I'm just saying! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>

Happy Easter!</div>
Welcome!http://www.blogger.com/profile/18368348098383675536noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4315230111198629104.post-2993424549213220072014-04-05T09:38:00.000-07:002014-04-05T10:55:21.620-07:00Freezer Paper Stencils and Other Gift Ideas<div style="text-align: center;">
Making gifts is one of my all-time favorite hobbies. So when a birthday, Christmas, or wedding or baby shower comes around, I get excited coming up with ideas to suit the occasion. I usually take it as an excuse to learn a new sewing trick or go look at pretty fabric. That way, I can justify my crafting obsession <i>and </i>make a personalized gift.<br />
<br />
Here's a few things to consider when coming up with a gift idea.<br />
First, is there something you know the recipient needs but wouldn't necessarily spend money on themselves?<br />
<br />
Second, what hobbies or interests does the receiver have? Gardeners might appreciate some chalkboard seed markers or vintage bird-feeder. Readers who drive a lot might like an audio book from their favorite author. If you know someone who loves throwing parties, handmade bunting or napkins are fun. You could compile energizing tunes for someone who loves to bust out the music while exercising. If your recipient loves organic products, you could make soy or beeswax candles with lavender or grapefruit essential oils, or natural soaps.<br />
<br />
Offering acts of service are awesome, especially when the budget is tight. I know as a busy momma of four, I deeply appreciate all the help in the yard, scrubbed floors, and home cooked meals we've received.<br />
<br />
Another thing to keep in mind when coming up with gift ideas are some of your favorite things you enjoy wearing or using. For example, my sister gave me a cute headband with a print she saw that "looked like Jessica." Scarves are another favorite I've received.<br />
<br />
One last thing. You know how when you're talking on the phone or hanging out together, people mention what they are trying to find or things they want. Keep tabs. Last June, when she came out to visit, my friend mentioned how much she liked my blue mason jars, but she wished they came in green for a kitchen soap dispenser. When I was putting together her birthday present, I found one and snatched it.<br />
<br /></div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I just finished her gift and it's ready to send off in the mail today (if I can manage to get to the post office before closing time.) Em, if you see this post, stop reading this until you've opened your package. She's a talented writer and exceptional cook, so this is what I came up with:</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj_Nm1FtcY9z_klWiRWwfdQT6rNWU7HEwFnYQGsrL92TwikizWROV0_iHb-mitJdt8dmJZoCfo86Rbd6jhY8zH5Cx9ZVuoGQD_ptDXvc05qb8xagYX_QnVpNjE6H_2wtNjWbLq2vjouslbw/s1600/IMGP4543.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj_Nm1FtcY9z_klWiRWwfdQT6rNWU7HEwFnYQGsrL92TwikizWROV0_iHb-mitJdt8dmJZoCfo86Rbd6jhY8zH5Cx9ZVuoGQD_ptDXvc05qb8xagYX_QnVpNjE6H_2wtNjWbLq2vjouslbw/s1600/IMGP4543.JPG" height="426" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Two kitchen towels, a soap dispenser and two knit potholders. The potholders were simple, just something I've never made. Working with two strands of yarn in different colors on size 7 needles made them thicker. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I also picked up some of my favorite kitchen towels and stenciled this vintage typewriter onto the white one. It's easy to do, it just takes a little time cutting the image out of freezer paper with an exacto knife. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Once you've cut the image out, iron the freezer paper to your fabric using a lower heat setting, with the shiny side of the paper down. It will adhere to the fabric. Lay your materials on a newspaper in case any paint bleeds through. Then, using your sponge brush, dab the fabric paint directly onto the stencil cutout. Once it's dry, peel off the freezer paper, turn the fabric right side down, and iron the fabric, preferably on an old rag or something you don't care about, to set the paint. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>

Welcome!http://www.blogger.com/profile/18368348098383675536noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4315230111198629104.post-51826639010570208692014-03-15T21:10:00.000-07:002014-03-19T19:28:19.081-07:00"Spoiled" Vacations<div style="text-align: center;">
I don't remember staying in a hotel until I was maybe thirteen. Our vacations were always spent tent camping for two weeks every August. One week at the mountains for dad and a week at the beach for mom. And I loved every minute of it, except being cold in the night and not wanting to emerge from under the covers in the morning. I remember waking to the sound of crackling fire and a kerosene stove, which, I knew was warming water for hot chocolate. Dad was always up first getting things ready for us to warm ourselves by the fire before we went exploring.<br />
<br />
I haven't given up tenting it, not yet. It gets harder with babies in a sleeping bag and trying not to wake the entire campsite, but it's so worth it. I want the kids to grow up with that experience. But that's not to say I don't appreciate what a nice indoor vacation has to offer, especially during the winter months when we could not otherwise venture out.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
We just spent several days at one of our favorite vacation spots in Washington. On the drive to Port Townsend, as we crossed a beautiful bridge over the Puget Sound, I saw my first whale. It was incredible. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
This was the view from my window. I went to sleep with the stars reflecting on the still water at night. There was even a shooting star bidding me goodnight and the sound of water lapping on the shore just a few steps from my room greeting me in the morning. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>

It was relaxing and beautiful and peaceful. Now, our next major family vacation will be spent in a tent. Maybe not as relaxing now that I am on the parent end of things, responsible for all the packing, but definitely worth it.</div>
Welcome!http://www.blogger.com/profile/18368348098383675536noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4315230111198629104.post-16232866831059000612014-03-07T10:38:00.001-08:002014-03-07T10:41:06.144-08:00How to Make an Inverted Pleat<div style="text-align: center;">
My Addy loves pockets. So does Lucy, who has an eye for small details and usually fills her pockets with sparkles or other tiny objects she finds when she's out and about. I had them in mind when I was designing the pocket for this skirt. I wanted to mimic the look of the petals on tulips, so I went with an inverted pleat.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjtJIuK4t14OzX7FCbNH5jzxl7gZYTu1rmvuzgvUKfPFeh2efjOSeSbtpTzvGpjhhiK44rfYknO6CmdgbTsu0iFtGjBSLyvQ1zwhy_ZCUmqMvR-Ikke9sEKEN9GeAcApAoUWFKLFJZ-k1RK/s1600/IMGP4458.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjtJIuK4t14OzX7FCbNH5jzxl7gZYTu1rmvuzgvUKfPFeh2efjOSeSbtpTzvGpjhhiK44rfYknO6CmdgbTsu0iFtGjBSLyvQ1zwhy_ZCUmqMvR-Ikke9sEKEN9GeAcApAoUWFKLFJZ-k1RK/s1600/IMGP4458.JPG" height="426" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
To make an inverted pleat, measure the width of the item, with the fabric right side up. Mark the center point. In this case, my unfinished pocket was 8 in. wide, so I marked it at 4 in.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg_R3uYR6YlsrKFm8gwz98gv_mjkY2-rW1G_9rShkDvf-ghp4Q6VjOMiCm2X0KqghCRxGoV4gSn2y7AfsAuR4fZ0OGkGNyQMb0yuJZPzmJ0arq5nUbWawcdLcFSnAnK3yr0HDEouhH44sR5/s1600/IMGP4435.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg_R3uYR6YlsrKFm8gwz98gv_mjkY2-rW1G_9rShkDvf-ghp4Q6VjOMiCm2X0KqghCRxGoV4gSn2y7AfsAuR4fZ0OGkGNyQMb0yuJZPzmJ0arq5nUbWawcdLcFSnAnK3yr0HDEouhH44sR5/s1600/IMGP4435.JPG" height="266" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
On either side of that middle point, mark 3 separate points at equal distances from the middle mark. Since my middle mark was at the four, I marked my pocket at 1,2, and 3 on the left, and 5,6,and 7 on the right. In other words, each mark was one inch away from the other to make equal distances from the middle mark.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiEnQ28RN2greUXOJNLD8zUFGOSGEdPXlKZ1GYqGSuK-mrkUfOSI8sebs3u0Ysl9R8ht0YSxgWnnqK6UfMLsiX6ATd3ezIu6r9G6lIEz_8C4c9hmGW_LlNd2ajNNJakdCjQUjQ5LVzZflOC/s1600/IMGP4436.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiEnQ28RN2greUXOJNLD8zUFGOSGEdPXlKZ1GYqGSuK-mrkUfOSI8sebs3u0Ysl9R8ht0YSxgWnnqK6UfMLsiX6ATd3ezIu6r9G6lIEz_8C4c9hmGW_LlNd2ajNNJakdCjQUjQ5LVzZflOC/s1600/IMGP4436.JPG" height="426" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Next step. Find the middle of the three marks on the left or right of the middle mark. It doesn't matter which side. For my pocket, since I started on the right, I found the 6 in. mark. Pinch the fabric in your fingers and pull it to the center mark. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgYgFiGpGqUBPV8zM711PU_OBQY5akJ65S0SjFs7y3D0lKBIU1ubM9EyJ2Kogol-a65ArCi4UqIDelk4HS6dy28FZILfO86LgBbfd0QBHKQJLkXUzgyDpHqK4SX67IrYhX9g6LyGh7x9j8L/s1600/IMGP4437.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgYgFiGpGqUBPV8zM711PU_OBQY5akJ65S0SjFs7y3D0lKBIU1ubM9EyJ2Kogol-a65ArCi4UqIDelk4HS6dy28FZILfO86LgBbfd0QBHKQJLkXUzgyDpHqK4SX67IrYhX9g6LyGh7x9j8L/s1600/IMGP4437.JPG" height="425" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgmHkKaddTog649XOSNT-YGB0XLURu04SsyAjdJh5gZ97_gNDSgGosc7hN1c8K9GtpkOGxy3zoa9zQ_koczdV0G8bD8Te60cL991gsRvz8qmkMxFkTjjSuKhi-QU712Q8DuH_-LZsNvAiZb/s1600/IMGP4438.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgmHkKaddTog649XOSNT-YGB0XLURu04SsyAjdJh5gZ97_gNDSgGosc7hN1c8K9GtpkOGxy3zoa9zQ_koczdV0G8bD8Te60cL991gsRvz8qmkMxFkTjjSuKhi-QU712Q8DuH_-LZsNvAiZb/s1600/IMGP4438.JPG" height="426" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
Now repeat on the other side. You should have something resembling this. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
There should be three layers of fabric on each side (bottom, middle, and top.) </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Pin it as needed and sew within the seam allowance. For the pocket, because I needed a finished top seam, I folded it twice toward the wrong side of the fabric (about 1/4 in. folds) and pressed before sewing.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjKbtEGfHJHvclQzl847M2hNcPR27JfwppR1HgsQMqCNykF81lCKOgDTRWD2Vy0jYjoer_wUsGHpb0_jjIDtbJRfZmmExSrEtF_rsby33MVOpvIycE87se7G19ALHAwxU25IhIfGZ6GEZsw/s1600/IMGP4459.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjKbtEGfHJHvclQzl847M2hNcPR27JfwppR1HgsQMqCNykF81lCKOgDTRWD2Vy0jYjoer_wUsGHpb0_jjIDtbJRfZmmExSrEtF_rsby33MVOpvIycE87se7G19ALHAwxU25IhIfGZ6GEZsw/s1600/IMGP4459.JPG" height="425" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
And there you have it. An inverted pleat on a pocket ready to fill with sprigs of rosemary from the garden or seashells on the beach. </div>

It's been awhile since I've knit a buttonhole, so I needed a refresher's course. There are lots of ways to make them, for all sorts of purposes, and if you are following a pattern, it will tell you which is needed. I'm making a teething bib for a shower, inspired by a beautiful set of bibs a friend sent me when Evie was born. I'm using a yarn-over button hole. It's super simple, so even if you are teaching yourself to knit (like myself), it's super easy. Once you reach the place in your row where you need a buttonhole, knit two together. If you are following a pattern, it's probably abbreviated "k2tog." </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
Then, continue knitting to the end of the row. When you turn your work, knit all the stitches. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

It began this morning at the breakfast table. If you looked closely you could see falling snowflakes every few seconds or so. By the time we started school, it was steadily coming down. When we woke up from our nap, there was at least an inch. And still it continues to fall. I love it. It's beautiful and peaceful. Thankfully, we are all safe and warm. I watch the snow piling on the trees and I remember college days in Ohio where snow was a permanent feature on the lawn during the winter. Here, it is a rare and well received occurrence. </div>

When I got home we had beautiful, sunny weather that clearly showed all the clutter that has accumulated in our home following the holidays and sick days, I thought, "I need to try that."<br />
It was kind of exciting raiding all the closets, bedrooms, and kitchen and ruthlessly eliminating things from our stash. If your husband is a pack rat, you might want to start while he's at work. Just make sure you don't take anything too important without asking. I'm just sayin'. In the course of one afternoon, I filled a large box and four paper bags to donate. It felt awwweSOME!!! Totally worth the effort.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi709BE8KNR9cmsAgOhe03TmtkWphuWI9k78Fhbqm2TbYG9_xRBuAfNJtqxUNW0sRU5VAFk8w9BMCTuNY8qtS8sDPmZj-yLqMWtv9m1OyimZpnKHze4xe3RUcWNgATJ2-LGh6__qfXvI8UO/s1600/IMGP4216.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi709BE8KNR9cmsAgOhe03TmtkWphuWI9k78Fhbqm2TbYG9_xRBuAfNJtqxUNW0sRU5VAFk8w9BMCTuNY8qtS8sDPmZj-yLqMWtv9m1OyimZpnKHze4xe3RUcWNgATJ2-LGh6__qfXvI8UO/s1600/IMGP4216.JPG" height="426" width="640" /></a></div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
If you need a little boost, pour yourself a yummy cup of strong tea and get to work. Still not motivated? Start with one room, one closet, or one drawer. Or fill a box. Set a time limit. Once you get going, it's sort of addicting. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
For me, the incentive was getting the indoors in order, so that in spring I can focus on a garage sale to clear the garage and spend some serious time in the yard. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

Can anyone tell me what purpose the bay leaf serves in cooking? I've tried making soups and sauces with and without, and not noticed a difference. Maybe I don't have a refined palette, I don't know. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I'm sorry about the follow-up for the d.i.y gift idea. In the world of sewing, things don't always turn out like you planned. That was the case, anyway, with the tutu I made for Lucy following our trip to "The Nutcracker." I'll have to give that another go soon. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
In the meantime, I couldn't come empty handed. Here's an easy soup recipe we make all the time around here. During the last week we have had pretty much every variety of the flu bug, and with our appetite slowly returning, we needed chicken soup. My hubby surprised us with a roasted chicken from Costco. Costco makes a good roasted chicken. We save all the extra meat, stick it in the fridge, and then add all the drippings and bones in a pot with about 2 inches of water. Simmer that on low heat for at least an hour or two, cool, and then save the broth. (Side note: you can add veggies, like onion, garlic cloves, celery and carrots with seasonings, but you don't have to.) It keeps well several days in the fridge, or you can freeze it for a couple months.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Tonight, with runny nose and watery eyes, I chopped an onion, few stalks of celery, and three carrots. I like to add at least 3 cloves minced garlic. I let those cook in my pot with olive oil on low for about 4 minutes. Next, I grab out my broth and add that to my simmering veggies, along with some salt, pepper, that mysterious bay leaf, and a couple tablespoons of Italian seasoning (but not before I rub them between the palm of my hands to release some of their flavor.) If it's bland I add a little spoonful of our "Better than Bouillon Chicken Base."</div>

If you have fresh herbs, you can alternatively add some fresh parsley, thyme, and oregano. Whatever you like. Cover, and let it sit tight on low heat until the veggies are tender. While you're waiting on that, cut up the leftover chicken. Toss that in a few minutes before the soup's ready to eat. </div>

In tonight's soup, I added a potato I needed to use. We've added zucchini, leftover rice, quinoa, or other veggies you might have lying around. Some veggies, like zucchini, you add it later than the other veggies, about ten minutes before serving.<br />
With dinner, we enjoyed this foggy view outside, tucked under a cozy blanket and a box of quickly disappearing kleenex near at hand. Truth be told, I've had kleenex stuffed in my nose practically all day to keep my eye from tearing. Pretty glamorous, I know. The soup is a great starter, but if know any cold medicines safe for nursing mothers, please, let me know.<br />

Have you heard that song by Mumford and Sons, "Ghosts That We Knew"? It played on Pandora this morning while I was clearing the breakfast dishes. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
"Give me hope in the darkness that I will see the light." </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
That line made me think. We've had a challenging last couple of weeks. And, being that 50 % of the time I tend to be a 'glass half empty' type of gal, I can focus more on what's wrong than what's right. Now don't judge, I'm just being honest. Anyway, with all the holiday festivities, we've been short on sleep, and desperate for some routine. It shows, too. On New Year's, on our way in the door to Church, I made a curt reply to my hubby who dropped the baby's hat in the mud. Poor guy. He was just being helpful, too. The lady behind us noticed and offered her help, saying our hands looked full. Humbling. Typically we like people to see the best version of ourselves, not the weaknesses. Since we sat behind the lady during Mass I kept thinking about how I need to be a gentler, kinder, better momma and wife. I should be acting like the person I am created to be all the time, no matter where I am. Wake up, O lyre and harp! I will wake the dawn with my song." (Psalm 57:8) </span></div>

That's what I thought of when I heard those Mumford and Sons lyrics playing this morning. Sometimes we have to strain our eyes to see the light in the darkness. It takes effort. It requires grace.<br />
While I tapped my foot to the beat, I felt like a part of the fog that has settled in my head was beginning to clear. <span id="goog_2019982944"></span><span id="goog_2019982945"></span> I have to make room for Christ, so His peace can reign within these walls. No matter what storm is raging. No matter how many times I hear, "Give that back" or "She just hit me!" No matter how many naps are interrupted, or time outs I have to give. No matter how many dishes are piled up in the kitchen sink. No matter what difficulties we face this coming year, "<span style="background-color: white; color: #3a3a3a; font-family: Helvetica, Verdana, Arial, 'Bitstream Vera Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 19.03125px; text-align: start;">put on a heart of compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience; </span><span style="background-color: white; color: #3a3a3a; font-family: Helvetica, Verdana, Arial, 'Bitstream Vera Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 19.03125px; text-align: start;">bearing with one another, and forgiving each other...</span><span style="background-color: white; color: #3a3a3a; font-family: Helvetica, Verdana, Arial, 'Bitstream Vera Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 19.03125px; text-align: start;">And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called." Colossians 3:12-15</span></div>

P.S. I haven't forgotten the d.i.y. gift I mentioned in the last post. It's in the works!<br />

We wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! I hope your holidays have been full of blessings and laughter. </div>

I'll meet you back here next week with another homemade gift idea I'm getting ready for a special birthday girl. Hint: the Nutcracker.</div>

I can't believe we are just days away. I'm sending packages and finishing last touches on gifts for the kids. If you are looking for some last minute ideas, take a look.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
First on the list are these boot toppers.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh6V52M-HgkU9iJZdWfo6wBkDwGdiKu3mRts9jiv2zCXea9G-sQysAE3JPRJFdOV9J9mNQomLwoe4C3PQxCmKdvTBiuA6xFeNWzIfdux2LhubNejBkWNxo3ELJA5Wa8FbuKmLL6QLaHO8X8/s1600/IMGP4109.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="425" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh6V52M-HgkU9iJZdWfo6wBkDwGdiKu3mRts9jiv2zCXea9G-sQysAE3JPRJFdOV9J9mNQomLwoe4C3PQxCmKdvTBiuA6xFeNWzIfdux2LhubNejBkWNxo3ELJA5Wa8FbuKmLL6QLaHO8X8/s640/IMGP4109.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
These made with a soft, chunky weight yarn. I used two needles, and when I was finished, sewed the two ends together with a knitting needle. Directions are below. The tweed pattern seen on the lower half requires multiples of 2 plus 1, so I first cast on 41 stitches. The top rows were ribbed (knit two, purl two - purl last three stitches.) Once I reached the length I wanted, I began the tweed. </div>
<br />
Row 1: (Right side) purl 2, *yb, slip a stitch purlwise, yf, purl 1, repeat from * to last stitch, purl 1<br />
Row 2: knit 1, yf, slip 1 purlwise, yb, k1 repeat from * to end of the row<br />
<br />
Yarn back (yb)- place the working yarn, or tail from the right needle to the ball of yarn, to the back<br />
Yarn front 9yf)- bring yarn forward of the right needle<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
Then just cast off and weave in ends or tie in small knot, if you prefer. To sew your side seams together, turn the boot cuff right sides together. I threaded a large eyed needle with the same yarn, tied a knot at the end, and sewed the seam together by inserting the needle into the stitches closest to the outer edge. I prefer a small knot, and then wove in the end. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgoRVRGUYNDWdY0H4lhvMZSD_nkOMReMz5k2nEyD0mokMlfxxiQiHwFU64pbmdOBChPBKxfYmWwEARPfCcpGUCgvqaccgnQhL-Wj1kgTktOPNwEDHw56Lm33gFczLgDCCVd6L3AAp8WctSd/s1600/IMGP4113.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgoRVRGUYNDWdY0H4lhvMZSD_nkOMReMz5k2nEyD0mokMlfxxiQiHwFU64pbmdOBChPBKxfYmWwEARPfCcpGUCgvqaccgnQhL-Wj1kgTktOPNwEDHw56Lm33gFczLgDCCVd6L3AAp8WctSd/s640/IMGP4113.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
These boot cuffs were made using a lace pattern from <a href="http://knitpicks.com/">knitpicks.com</a>. It's a little more time consuming, but so beautiful when it's finished. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjAlOPIRuEXEMII6gWWKwPHbb-BjqxFkdI4usCrYXN1LELL5zndku4JfW0q5ViQ6xjdcdwURWFnqUxHb7US9fJOJULD3WuwtUKizZcQ0Lex52NaNmhgbYI6wUjCtum9_5VZx1-J-I3_vg8a/s1600/IMGP4121.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjAlOPIRuEXEMII6gWWKwPHbb-BjqxFkdI4usCrYXN1LELL5zndku4JfW0q5ViQ6xjdcdwURWFnqUxHb7US9fJOJULD3WuwtUKizZcQ0Lex52NaNmhgbYI6wUjCtum9_5VZx1-J-I3_vg8a/s640/IMGP4121.JPG" width="426" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The second gift I made was inspired by Country Living. I should say, my father-in-law made. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I told him the idea, and he put it together for me. Thanks Gramps! I needed an elf to help me finish. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
To make an I-Pad/ recipe holder, you need a cutting board, a ledge (we made one, but you can use one from the Scrabble game or glass knobs) and a triangular piece of wood strong enough to hold it up in the back. We used some of that gripper stuff for the bottom, just to keep everything from slipping. Then use a hot glue gun to put it all together! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Last up are these felt dolls. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
Each doll is made by stitching together two pieces of felt from a hand drawn pattern I made. For the dress, I cut the a piece of fabric and sewed it to felt. I used fray protector along the outer fabric edge. The faces are sewn with embroidery floss. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

If you want a simple, ten minute way to decorate for Our Lady of Guadalupe, here's a couple easy ideas. We read about Juan Diego and Our Lady of Guadalupe. Then we looked online for a small picture to print.This image is not the traditional Our Lady of Guadalupe; Addy chose it. Then we cut these felt flowers to put around the picture.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEibWZoE8EJGmmqICHtZhLNE99RvfUosrT_Mb6oa-G7Et2f51aO6o5mA0G-qIaUgbPhP90-zl-7fMEneIPwL6JxGe_Q-htag46q2Q7B5QvEoRj0IV1FClWHn6YHGjpxJSIIfq_reV22tlVrU/s1600/IMGP4029.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEibWZoE8EJGmmqICHtZhLNE99RvfUosrT_Mb6oa-G7Et2f51aO6o5mA0G-qIaUgbPhP90-zl-7fMEneIPwL6JxGe_Q-htag46q2Q7B5QvEoRj0IV1FClWHn6YHGjpxJSIIfq_reV22tlVrU/s640/IMGP4029.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I cut a curvy circle, about 4 in. in diameter. On one of the outer ripples, I started cutting into the circle and just continued to cut around in about 1/2 in. circle all the way to the center, leaving a little hook in the middle. Starting from the center, tuck in and around to the outer edge, securing with stitches or hot glue. I spread it out here, just to show you what it looks like.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I'm following up this year's gift making series with a scalloped hem I added to a kid's apron. For years I have wanted to try making this apron from Anthropologie.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://media-cache-ec0.pinimg.com/736x/43/5a/64/435a64f10f49842dc763d3b7791c052f.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://media-cache-ec0.pinimg.com/736x/43/5a/64/435a64f10f49842dc763d3b7791c052f.jpg" width="426" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
To make the scalloped hem, I added an extra 1.5 in. to the bottom of the apron. Sew the rest of apron as you normally would, turning back the edges twice, press, and sew. Do not sew along the bottom yet. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The next step is to either serge or cut along that bottom edge with pinking shears to prevent fraying. Turn the bottom edge 1.5 inches to the right side and iron.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjJo1LuiW3bthlpi1ATNAfdTqjfctdxx0jTpwAro9Z9lPDbrybPSsZIQaZiF7m0mixNyQ_NnW59HorHETdRQ1cKCPzM_99bJZq5PQbQiGlwtprPDDrjp3CTeFjZaOr-FWdy4iOSta20iU8N/s1600/IMGP3991.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjJo1LuiW3bthlpi1ATNAfdTqjfctdxx0jTpwAro9Z9lPDbrybPSsZIQaZiF7m0mixNyQ_NnW59HorHETdRQ1cKCPzM_99bJZq5PQbQiGlwtprPDDrjp3CTeFjZaOr-FWdy4iOSta20iU8N/s640/IMGP3991.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
This next part is where we get creative. Don't worry, if I can do it, we can do it together. Measure the width of your bottom hem and determine how big you want your curves. I wanted mine 4 inches long and 1 inch deep. Using a Trader Joe's paper bag, I measured and marked those increments on the paper and cut it out. You could also use a can of stewed tomatoes, olives, or diced chilies, by continuing to draw along the outer edge of one side. Just evenly divide your width into the number of scallops you want.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgbmEN6___12BqjolMbWgxZeTxPC-i_v7_jV1OUqSTnOVmNmSbNWDZlBh9k7nDitGvwC94xnqNQT4zHh8jD-5Wjcf9P2OF_mCEiH3EJ4KvHHKyUyqPI1E7iIYJzmC8hzSOQzrjtaoGqh6bJ/s400/IMGP4033.JPG" width="400" /></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
Trace you pattern with chalk directly onto the wrong side of the pressed hem. Sew just inside the traced line, taking your time around the corners so you have a smooth curve. Then, cut the fabric close to that sewn line, leaving about 1/4 in. seam. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Turn the fabric right side out, using something like the handle of a wooden spoon to press out the corners. Press. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi1NUgSHiNhotz0YqchY7M8tf8M9gBw0ltKUIfvLhBhha-O7Tx22NHanEgy-X7K-FHzwYws4jTBp93B_8aiDZ5s0fR7oya9-CuSuiz1ZPTxL2ZaV-8pIbduxUE1y38pR_GLgjNqLTps6Opi/s1600/IMGP3997.JPG" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi1NUgSHiNhotz0YqchY7M8tf8M9gBw0ltKUIfvLhBhha-O7Tx22NHanEgy-X7K-FHzwYws4jTBp93B_8aiDZ5s0fR7oya9-CuSuiz1ZPTxL2ZaV-8pIbduxUE1y38pR_GLgjNqLTps6Opi/s320/IMGP3997.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
I wanted an additional border behind the scalloped edge. To do this, cut a rectangle 5 inches wide and 1 inch wider than the finished bottom hem. Fold the rectangle in half lengthwise, press, and sew along the open edge, leaving 1/4 in. seam. Turn right side out, and press. Tuck the sides about 1/2 in toward the inside of the rectangle and press, making sure the edges match up with the outer edge of the apron. Sew closed.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Pin to the bottom edge of the apron, about 1/2 in. from the top of the rectangle. Sew pieces together.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj9r1YxLkhgc1U0-VpDQpjnBZ7yseB8NiuW4X_5IemElKMnriYwcTV8hBNyUppRkydcNfqN-hEvxGsMjybYcuF9gHI4Sl0rlW6wKRHntdd4kRmt1ljjzgjlsjlooIqgtHXZ_Q8tsmVw-1pZ/s1600/IMGP4025.JPG" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj9r1YxLkhgc1U0-VpDQpjnBZ7yseB8NiuW4X_5IemElKMnriYwcTV8hBNyUppRkydcNfqN-hEvxGsMjybYcuF9gHI4Sl0rlW6wKRHntdd4kRmt1ljjzgjlsjlooIqgtHXZ_Q8tsmVw-1pZ/s320/IMGP4025.JPG" width="425" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
That's it. A fairly easy gift for a kid's apron. Or for an adult, you might add some favorite recipes, cookbook, or new serving dish. Or some homemade jam or honey. Maybe even a new cutting knife or silverware. You could make hot pads to match. Fun!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjhZhtmH_iY4__xpD3gjdOGPhz_QRtX8w-IWcey_d9Uub02f0ke7s5niYrbkBraeuiMnIBIyiu7etSc2sNuphHMl8oaJCAQWiU40gPOlctCAXw0YitXNdnQtQp8ck_C2DaqAd6Kl5Omifks/s1600/IMGP4008.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjhZhtmH_iY4__xpD3gjdOGPhz_QRtX8w-IWcey_d9Uub02f0ke7s5niYrbkBraeuiMnIBIyiu7etSc2sNuphHMl8oaJCAQWiU40gPOlctCAXw0YitXNdnQtQp8ck_C2DaqAd6Kl5Omifks/s640/IMGP4008.JPG" width="426" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
And so the boys aren't left out, here is the tractor/car apron I made. Happy Feast Day!</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Happy Feast of <a href="http://discoveringromania.wordpress.com/2011/12/05/saint-nicolas-and-his-tradition-worldwide/">Saint Nicholas</a>! We are loving our first (almost) winter snow! The kids are pink nosed, chasing snowflakes and loving every minute of it. Even Baby Evelyn watches from the window and smiles. It's magical. Just like this season. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Since Christmas is coming, it's time to get busy making presents. If you need a quick kid's gift idea to finish in an afternoon, felt food is simple and inexpensive. You could whip up a set of fruit and veggies, or toast and eggs, before Christmas. There are lots of free patterns online, and at our local fabric store they had 5 felt squares for $1. I have some polyfiber fill, which most craft stores carry for around $5, I think. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Below I have instructions for the orange slices I made for Addy's birthday. For more ideas, <a href="http://www.apartmenttherapy.com/how-to-make-felt-food-free-tutorials-135005">this</a> is a good start. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgcHeXZgNHgvE78kt42ViEiUNWr-8aIqZkfild8bzMHyC3Sfp-TOelR5AJa1vCv5AovVPN_wMil6LDKhAokXEZ2uyL3DY7_huJWJqck9sQZfyYZxFm2qpAhwqYX1X3iTwBfg70KyQui5dZ0/s1600/IMGP3935.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgcHeXZgNHgvE78kt42ViEiUNWr-8aIqZkfild8bzMHyC3Sfp-TOelR5AJa1vCv5AovVPN_wMil6LDKhAokXEZ2uyL3DY7_huJWJqck9sQZfyYZxFm2qpAhwqYX1X3iTwBfg70KyQui5dZ0/s400/IMGP3935.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
For each slice, you will need one three inch in diameter circle, and one orange circle about 1/4 smaller. The "peel" is about 3 3/4 inch long and 1 1/4 at the widest part. I just cut a pattern piece from paper, traced it onto the felt, and cut. I made two, so I cut two of each from my pattern.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjaVNGSbl115uw_3RwgOulIUXumSC9htviw1U0ttYRq2Z5vcInpNEPGE-_NMx3FnD38Lwtvq9Ymzj-lGdKKKm51og-1IeQQSX_wbEmyCxPqIXkYZ1pHxD9FyS54paAFvDqFERqxJLj7lG5z/s1600/IMGP3936.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="425" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjaVNGSbl115uw_3RwgOulIUXumSC9htviw1U0ttYRq2Z5vcInpNEPGE-_NMx3FnD38Lwtvq9Ymzj-lGdKKKm51og-1IeQQSX_wbEmyCxPqIXkYZ1pHxD9FyS54paAFvDqFERqxJLj7lG5z/s640/IMGP3936.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
I handstitched the orange circle to the white first around the outer perimeter, and then sewed larger stitches with embroidery floss. They don't have to be perfect. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhNL4hDVKdcoe-ImuxNtiMrZ9OLx3JogxNI1ietnUMTeiNYtZbKVvKqToEmerFnmZUf6LmSBFnjT9LfqT5k9c3Tc9Bkt9Y5q_p3qc5UqaoI-GTOVraTwSQrx1cbT-eVVw4IC96Jg-S99omx/s1600/IMGP3939.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhNL4hDVKdcoe-ImuxNtiMrZ9OLx3JogxNI1ietnUMTeiNYtZbKVvKqToEmerFnmZUf6LmSBFnjT9LfqT5k9c3Tc9Bkt9Y5q_p3qc5UqaoI-GTOVraTwSQrx1cbT-eVVw4IC96Jg-S99omx/s400/IMGP3939.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEggD9UqNoIHHy-Pzx6ZSUfWUUMP3-pOQy0-DLv0CUk-yot-wXNOtX22cQ1Kixy2HKt8fJssz488cVhLluCa8CYqVxJKq1k80xe1KggDAD3lo9UU9Xq7MgBnVHpOH9L8SBAFCgtF23PpUmqB/s1600/IMGP3940.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEggD9UqNoIHHy-Pzx6ZSUfWUUMP3-pOQy0-DLv0CUk-yot-wXNOtX22cQ1Kixy2HKt8fJssz488cVhLluCa8CYqVxJKq1k80xe1KggDAD3lo9UU9Xq7MgBnVHpOH9L8SBAFCgtF23PpUmqB/s640/IMGP3940.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
Then, starting from the inside to hide my knot, I sewed small stitches around the outer peel and white circle piece. Before closing it all the way, I stuffed the orange with poly fiber fill, and then completed the sewing to close the hole. </div>

I've been under the weather the last few weeks, but I am so so grateful I was able to join family in celebrating a wonderful Thanksgiving.<br />
<br />
And now,with Advent starting yesterday, we are already looking to Christmas. I went to a brunch at Church last weekend to get some ideas for celebrating this season. My main focus this year is to keep things simple, peaceful, and meaningful for the family. I want our home and hearts ready to welcome the Christ child. So this year, to keep me grounded when I want to make 50 things before Christmas, I am going to slow down and make time for prayer every day. We didn't get a chance to make a Jesse tree this year, but I found <a href="http://www.pinterest.com/pin/71283606575742768/">this</a> list of daily Bible passages to follow the story of salvation history up to the birth of Jesus. Tomorrow, for example, when we read the story of Adam and Eve in Genesis, the kids can draw an apple and serpent, or Adam and Eve. Next year we'll do the ornament exchange for the Jesse tree; this year we'll keep it simple.<br />

<br />
Another Advent tradition is filling a jar with 24 separate, realistic goals for each day. We wrote on small strips of paper things like, "Share our toys," and "Listen first time." Each day we draw one goal out of the jar and encourage each other to do it that day. By evening, if we have met the goal, we'll place the strip of paper in a manger, like straw, making a warm soft bed for Jesus. Today was "Use kind words" and the kids had to remind me at one point that we don't want a bare manger come Christmas. Who's idea was this anyway? This might be a little more difficult than I anticipated.<br />
<br />
Another exciting idea for Advent is celebrating the feast days during the season. Here's a few ways you might try:<br />
St. Nicholas (Dec. 6) - Traditionally, the kids put their shoes out before bed on Dec. 5th, and they are filled with goodies when they get up the next morning. One mom shared that she finds an Advent book each year to give, besides the chocolate gold coins.<br />
Our Lady of Guadalupe (Dec. 12) can be celebrated with some roses (felt or real) on a table runner, reminding us of the flowers falling from the tunic of St. Juan Diego, and some Mexican food for dinner.<br />
On St. Lucy's day, (Dec. 13) we plan on dressing Lucy in a homemade, simple white dress made from eyelet sewn on daddy's white shirt collar, and a red ribbon around her waist. She'll treat us with hot chocolate and a sweet treat for breakfast. So many things to celebrate this season! There were lots of other wonderful traditions shared at the brunch, but these seem like a good start. <br />
<br />
I am scaling back on all the ideas I had for gift-making so we can slow it down and be at peace. Like one lady at brunch said, if your traditions are going to make you shout at the kids, don't do them. Keep it simple. Nevertheless, you can't expect me not to make anything. So, check back here for some gift ideas, including several easy do-it-yourself presents.<br />

It happens every year about this time. The "rain, rain, rain comes down, down, down" in Washington, and my thoughts naturally turn to gifts I plan to make for Christmas and kids' birthdays. It helps me get excited for the cosy, gray months ahead. </div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
I've just cast on a new knitting project, and I'm thankful for Facebook, which connected me with more experienced knitters who could help me solve a beginner's dilemma. Making gifts inspires me to try new things, like cabling, in this case. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
But as often happens with young artists in the house, my four year old grabbed the needles this morning and tried to pick up where I left off. We relocated the knitting to a safer, higher location, and grabbed this project for Lu. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I cut a piece of burlap to fit inside an embroidery hoop, and threaded a plastic needle (from their lace card set) with scrap yarn I had. This way Lu can start learning the basics of sewing safely, and with confidence. Once she gets the hang of it, we plan on sketching designs she can sew or embroider. And my knitting project is safer. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
How do you settle in for winter?</div>

Take, for instance, our doors. Some of them badly chipped and worn, all adorned with gold handles, some with silver on one side. We made a trip to the hardware store to compare prices and explore our options. The least expensive handles in the style we liked were about eleven dollars each. We needed nine, so for about one hundred dollars, we could have all new handles. Or, we could lightly sand our existing handles with a fine grit sandpaper, spray with this:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://www.rustoleum.com/cbgimages/products/249131_0910_UNI_11oz_Metallic_OilRubbedBronze_L.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="https://www.rustoleum.com/cbgimages/products/249131_0910_UNI_11oz_Metallic_OilRubbedBronze_L.jpg" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><br /></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
...and have the style we liked for less than ten dollars total. Not bad. So my husband is patiently taking down all the doors in need of sanding and a fresh coat of paint, removing the handles, and turning this:<br />

Our kitchen is in the process of getting a much needed makeover. We have been experimenting and budgeting to see what we can and should do. One of the items on the priority list is changing the hardware. Our existing hinges were covered in thick coats of paint, which we needed to remove. Here's how to do it. First, cover the bottom of an old pan with baking soda (preferably a pan you don't plan on using again.)</div>

Most of the paint should peel off with your hands. You might need a metal tool to get into the crevices. If the paint is stubborn or in multiple layers, you might need to repeat the process until all the paint is gone. </div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
If you have cool, interesting or original hardware, this is a natural way to restore metal pieces without resorting to harsh paint stripping chemicals. Once you've removed the paint, you can polish with a 2-in-1 oil or other metal oil to revive the metal. </div>

A gorgeous sunny day. A list of chores on the one hand, a warm October afternoon on the other.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Option 1: Stay and clean. Option 2: Clean later and go enjoy the outdoors. We went with option #2. That sun was just calling me outdoors. Leave the chores for a rainy day. Today we are going to meet friends at the pumpkin patch. We need us some pumpkins. Bumpy, round, adorable pumpkins. And now we are warming up to the idea of fall.</div>

Driving across these bridges on our way to Sauvie Island Pumpkin Patch, I was reminded of the many reasons I love the Pacific Northwest. My jaw dropped crossing this first bridge; I had a view of Mt. Hood, Mt. St. Helens, and, I think, Mt. Adams (or Rainier)? Wow, incredible. </div>

We just got home from a trip to the East Coast. I hope to post some pictures of all our exploring soon, but first I wanted to follow up with gifts I made for a friend. Her boy is due next month, and she is busy decorating the nursery in a woodland theme.<br />

I also knit him a pair of orange ribbed legwarmers, but forgot to take a picture before I gave them. They are in Ohio, so, sadly. no pictures until I make more. To make a pair yourself, check out <a href="http://yellowtaxiblog.blogspot.com/2012_03_01_archive.html">this post</a><span id="goog_752437597"></span><span id="goog_752437598"></span><a href="http://www.blogger.com/"></a>. For a ribbed 'boyish' set, cast on 12 stitches on three double pointed needles. Continue knitting each row with knit 2 purl 2, until you reach your desired length. Cast off. I recently posted a basic knitting tutorial if you aren't sure how to cast on, knit, purl, or cast off.</div>

We are taking in the last moments of warmth before the cold, gray fall weather officially sets in. I am not ready to say goodbye to the sun. Not yet. I plan to take advantage of the few days of sun promised in this week's forecast.</div>
